Marlow Brown dreams of being a scientist, but when her chaotic home experiments drive Mum crazy, Marlow runs the risk of being banned from experimenting altogether. Surely there must be something she can do to keep on Mum’s good side while still continuing to follow her dream…
Marlow Brown has a zest for life and an enquiring mind; when an idea takes hold, she explores it no matter what.
In this first book she is smitten by science and it’s her eccentric Uncle Q who is her inspiration. She decides she wants to be just like him (minus the beard, of course). Perhaps in time, Marlow herself will be the one to inspire others to give science a go.
There’s actually a ‘Try It Yourself’ section at the back, with nice clear instructions (in case you’re the care-giver reading this and you’re starting to worry, like Marlow’s mum, about the potential mess factor.)
This is the first in a humorous series which is unassuming in its inclusive treatment of both gender and culture.

What teachers are saying:
“The experiments that Marlow completes are written up in detail allowing for a unique exploration of scientific language in a child-friendly literary setting. The exploration into scientific themes through characters who are as relatable as Marlow and her frustrated parents is sure to inspire some budding scientific minds.
“As a literacy learning specialist, I appreciated the exposure to interesting and mature language within this text. It offers a wonderful opportunity to expand childrens’ vocabulary.
“The combination of science and literacy in this text ensures it will appeal to a large variety of children.”
~Charlee Patrick, Primary Teacher
What reviewers are saying:
“A perfect read for someone who wants a funny book, that likes stories about families and strong interesting characters. You don’t have to love science to read this book but I bet you’ll want to try out the experiment at the back of the book after you read it!”
~Rebecca Bird, Peggi Williams Bookshop
“This is a wonderful book to encourage young science-loving girls to follow their dreams. It is simply written, full of interesting facts and easy-to-follow scientific methods and procedures. Marlow is a great role model for young readers, even though her scientific endeavours aren’t always successful. The book has lots of quirky illustrations by Marjory Gardner that enhance the text. I love the fact that, at the end of the book, the author has included an experiment for readers to try at home.
“I definitely recommend this book for 7-12-year-old readers, particularly girls, although I am sure boys would enjoy the story just as much. The book is fun and easy to read. It is an excellent transition book from picture books and early readers, to junior novels.”
~Jeffery E Doherty, Buzz Words Magazine
