So, what is The Story Corner? Well, it’s a place with multiple functions.
Firstly, if you’re a child or lover of kid lit, it’s a place to come and relax and be read to – be that from a picture book or a serialised chapter book. If you have a copy of the book yourself, you can read along; if you don’t, you can just sit back and listen. Each recording goes for between 5 and 15 minutes. You might even find your next book to read here.
Secondly, if you’re a parent or carer in search of a few minutes peace, setting your child up in The Story Corner might be one way you could grab it – if you don’t find yourself listening along as well, that is!
Thirdly, if you’re a teacher or librarian, this is a place you can direct children to find their next book to read, or to discover a new author, genre or series. The corner is divided into three sections – Picture Books, Junior Fiction Books and Taste and See. It’s the Taste and See section that is relevant here. This section will contain an ever growing selection of book tasters (sample recordings) from a whole variety of books and authors. At the moment there are six recordings to get us started with more waiting in the wings. (What’s more, for each of these recordings there’s a free draw for listeners – all they have to do is tell me in the comments section why they’d like a copy of the book to go into the draw for a book giveaway.)
Fourthly, if you’re a children’s author, this is a spot you can showcase a sample of your work. The Story Corner is not just about fostering a love of stories and reading in children, it’s also about promoting the work of good authors and illustrators. If you would like to have one of your picture books or the first chapter of a longer book considered for The Story Corner, please get in contact. The bigger the collection, the more useful this resource will be to children, teachers and librarians.
So, that’s it in a nutshell. At the moment The Story Corner is in its infancy, but with your help, it’s all primed to grow. In case you would like to go directly to the recordings, I’ll include a list and links below. Otherwise, feel free to use the big button at the bottom to browse the whole section. Any thoughts or comments? Feel free to share in the comments box. I’d love to hear from you!
