When I was eight, after we’d travelled back to England by car, I started at a new school. There really was a Christmas hat competition, and I really did make a hat that looked remarkably like the cornflake hat that Georgie made. (I take my hat off to Sarah Davis, who captured my memory so perfectly in her illustrations!) I don’t think I won though. It’s always good to write the endings you wish for, I find!
